Cognos has chosen Gitex to unveil Cognos 8, the latest version of its performance management solution. According to the company, this is the first Web-services based solution that provides the complete range of business intelligence (BI) functionality in a single product. “Cognos 8 BI includes a range of tools that run such functions as reporting, queries and analysis,” says David Brierley, regional manager, Cognos Middle East, Turkey and Greece. “It can be used to access a company’s entire range of data, versus earlier tools that needed different products to analyse different types of information. It truly allows you to analyse information in whatever tool makes the most sense to you and will lead many customers to choose Cognos as their business intelligence standard in a global market estimated to be worth about US $4.3 billion annually.” Cognos provides a bundle of software that helps companies improve their performance management. This allows them to better track their progress in achieving financial and strategic goals. The software is built on service-oriented architecture (SOA), which aims to make more software more flexible and adaptable to changes. “Companies in the Middle East have recognised that business intelligence and its broader applications in corporate and business performance management can help them optimise operations,” explains Brierley. “It is becoming a critical investment. According to ICD estimates, the Middle East business intelligence market has a growth rate of 23.6% per annum and will reach a capitalisation of US $75 million by 2007.” Cognos exhibiting on its own Gitex stand for the first time, is also set to announce a number of customer wins this week, beginning yesterday with Petrofac. The company, a supplier to the oil & gas industry, will use Cognos Controller to help it improve its financial reporting, planning and forecasting activities. “Cognos Controller won on all accounts,” explained Leigh Howarth, group financial controller at Petrofac. “It is the best solution to meet our needs, because it enables comprehensive group reporting and is an easy tool for non-technical finance staff to use. It meets our requirements for a robust, responsive and easy-to-use management reporting web based tool.”
