Etisalat has announced its first international roaming agreement for its 3G mobile users. Customers on the company’s “Mubashir” package can now use their 3G services, including video calling and high-speed internet, in Hong Kong. Etisalat has signed a deal with HK mobile operator Smart Tone allowing users from both networks to roam easily in either country. “This 3G roaming agreement is the first in a series that we will be signing and now our customers in UAE can make video calls even when roaming in Hong Kong. We are just embarking on allowing our 3G ‘Mubashir’ customers to continue to enjoy their unique benefits even when travelling,” says Mohammed Al Fahim, executive vice president for marketing at Etisalat. Etisalat customers in Hong Kong will need to manually search for and select the Smart Tone network when they arrive, in order to use their 3G services. The company says nine other 3G roaming agreements, covering the UK, Italy, Singapore, France, Slovenia, Bahrain, Portugal, Poland and Austria, should be in place by the end of 2005. There will also be an agreement with a second Hong Kong operator by the end of the year.
