Seven contractors have been short-listed to bid for the US $120 million (BD45 million) contract to build the King Hamad General Hospital in Bahrain. According to a source at the ministry of works and housing, the names of the seven contractors selected to bid for the project are Kuwait-based Mohammed Abdul Mohesen Al Khalifa and Sons, Al Mahadi Company, Bahrain International Contracting Company and Bahrain-based GP Zakaria Company. Also in the running is Ahmed Mansoor Al Ali Company, Mohammed Jalal Contracting Company and Sebarco Bahrain. The project design and supervision have been assigned to Australian Hospital Design Group, which is working in cooperation with Bahrain-based consultants Ismael Khonji Associates. The design architects Denton Corker Marshal have completed the prelimenary structural designs. The hospital is being built on an area of 227 000m2, which will also include the proposed Bahrain Medical University. The hospital will occupy about 63,000m2 with three four-storey buildings separated by open areas and health assistance departments. It will include a kitchen, a pharmacy, various clinics, a lecture hall able to seat 250 people, an IT centre, an accident and emergency department, operation rooms, a laboratory, out-patient and in-patient beds and a separate entrance for ambulances. There will also be parking spaces for up to 950 cars. It was announced earlier by an official at the ministry that the companies from Bahrain and Kuwait would be invited to tender based on the criteria set by the financing fund for the project. The companies were short-listed based on the standards set by the ministry and agreed upon by the fund. The tenders by these companies are expected to be evaluated in three months, according to the ministry of works and housing source. The foundations have been laid in the first phase of the hospital project, and the second phase will begin next month, to be completed by January 2006. The pillars of the main building will be set up at the beginning of next year and will be ready sometime in 2007.
