Hundreds of budding hoteliers from all over Oman flocked to Muscat last month to attend the InterContinental Hotels Group’s recruitment open day. The recruitment day, entitled ‘Ladder to Success’, attracted scores of visitors vying for a career with the hotel chain’s five Oman properties: Al Bustan Palace InterContinental, Muscat InterContinental, Crowne Plaza Muscat, Crowne Plaza Salalah and Holiday Inn Madinah. “With the recent influx of tourists to Oman it was evident that in order for the group to meet the needs and to continue to deliver the service that guests have come to expect from InterContinental Hotels Group’s Oman properties, an increase in man power is paramount,” Tony Zamora, general manager, Al Bustan Palace InterContinental Hotel told Hotelier Middle East. “Our key strategy is to continue to develop people and therefore our constant focus is not only on our guests but also each and every one of our employees. The open day allowed us to communicate our beliefs to prospective employees and also offer information on career progression within the group, whether in Oman or other parts of the region,” added Anwar Abdul Rahman Al-Khanjari, personnel manager of the InterContinental Muscat. Considered to be the first event of its kind to be held in the Sultanate, the group was recruiting staff for a total of 100 positions, at all levels and in all departments, including F&B, housekeeping, front office, engineering, accounts and recreation. According to Zamora, several positions have been filled as a result of the open day, and interviews are ongoing to match applicants to suitable remaining vacancies, while training has already started for some new recruits. The InterContinental Hotels Group is an active supporter of Omanisation and aims to attract young, keen Omani nationals. All the applicants recruited so far from the open day are Omani, and the company now plans to make this an annual event. InterContinental Hotels Group is reportedly in discussions to manage three future hotel projects in Oman, so open days such as this will be of value when sourcing a workforce for these properties.
