eCompany, the internet arm of Etisalat, has upgraded the speeds and cut the costs of its Al Shamil broadband services in a bid to win further favour with users. The ISP has essentially boosted all of Al Shamil’s connection speeds (with the exception of 2Mb users, who will only enjoy reduced rates). This means users who currently pay 190Dhs for a 256Kb connection will be upgraded to a 512Kb connection for no extra fee. Similarly, users paying 250Dhs for a 512Kb connection will be upgraded to a 1Mb connection. Meanwhile, 2Mb users will no longer pay 650Dhs and should see charges reduced to 450Dhs a month. However, as eCompany hasn’t updated its Al Shamil website (www.alshamil.ae) to reflect the new changes as yet, this 2MB pricing is still not yet confirmed. Along with this, the ISP has also upgraded its POP3 e-mail account storage capacity from 50MB to a far larger 500MB. The changes came into place on the 5th of September and all users need to do to upgrade their connections is to disconnect and reconnect to the internet. The parent company of eCompany, Etisalat, faced a hard time last month from consumers after net speeds slowed following damage to two undersea cables in the Indian Ocean. The organisation did not offer users any kind of refund as a result of the performance slowdown, therefore this new move could be construed as a means of improving the firm’s reputation with its UAE user base.
