Celebrity mag has one foot in the grave

A monthly magazine celebrating the lives of famous dead celebrities is to be launched across the region by Corporate Publishing International, Campaign Middle East can reveal.

A monthly magazine celebrating the lives of famous dead celebrities is to be launched across the region by Corporate Publishing International, Campaign Middle East can reveal. Called Goodbye, the “niche” publication is expected to hit the streets from the start of next month, priced around AED10 (US$2.70). Dominic de Sousa, publisher at CPI, denied the magazine would be “morbid”, claiming there was a genuine historical interest in the lives of deceased film and pop stars, political leaders and royalty. It will be targeted at older expatriates living in the region and will look at the lives of celebrities such as Princess Diana, Elvis and JFK. The idea came to de Sousa after he was reading a celebrity magazine that carried coverage of Pope John Paul II’s funeral. “I kept on seeing dead bodies of famous people being featured in magazines and thought about what these people had contributed during their lives. “The magazine will be a celebration of life and legacy. What I am looking at is fairly unique,” he conceded. “I had two or three people laughing initially, but when I explained the concept to them, they warmed to it.” CPI has registered the Goodbye name internationally and de Sousa claimed that advertisers had taken to it because it was a “novel idea”. In a separate move, CPI has confirmed that OK! Middle East will launch in Arabic on September 18. The decision came after research conducted with female Arab students showed they wanted to read about Hollywood and Arab stars in their own language. The initial print run for the Arabic edition will be 15,000 per week, taking the combined English and Arabic total to 30,000, according to figures from CPI. “The launch of an Arabic version of OK! Middle East will be an important addition to OK!’s international portfolio,” said de Sousa. “Moreover, this represents a significant publishing milestone as it will be the only internationally affiliated society magazine in Arabic available in the market.” The event will be marked with a glittering party at Dubai One & Only Royal Mirage hotel on the day of launch.
