Contractor Al Futtaim Carillion has taken delivery of a massive order of Volvo earthmoving equipment to work on the multi billion-dollar Dubai Festival City project. The new fleet will also be put to work on other major projects the contractor has picked up recently, including the residential element of Dubai Old Town. The fleet includes six L120 and L150 loading shovels, four 720 and 780 graders, five heavy duty excavators and 20 BL71 backhoe loaders. Paul Ward, plant and transport manager, said: “These machines have mainly been bought off the back of the Festival City project and they will be used on everything from building work through to the infrastructure work.” He added: “One of the attractive features of the Volvo equipment is its effective cooling system, which is so important in this climate.” It represents one of the biggest plant deals to have been signed in the local market this year and comes as local demand for excavators increases — mainly as a result of several recent earthmoving contract awards, such as Dutco-Balfour Beatty’s US $55 million Creek extension which will inolve the removal of around 6 million m3 of material. Dubai Festival City is the Middle East’s largest, privately-funded, mixed-use development. It will include the $354 million 422 room and 80 apartment InterContinental Dubai Festival City, its 4500 m2 conference centre, the 318 room Crowne Plaza Dubai Festival City and a 25- storey office tower. In addition, around 400 shops and 70 restaurants are planned for the development, many of which will be situated along the Riviera-style waterfront. Al Futtaim Carillion acquired the machines from Dubai-based Al-Futtaim Auto Machinery Company, the sole distributor for Volvo construction equipment in the UAE.
