The Kuwaiti Ministry of Public Works is overhauling its networking systems with the addition of internet protocol (IP) telephony and multimedia support. The enhanced network, which is being provided by Cisco, will offer Gigabit speed at the desktop and 10 Gigabit ethernet at the network core, the Ministry said last week. The new network, which will run at the Ministry’s headquarters, will be based on Cisco’s Architecture for Voice, Video and Integrated Data (AVVID) technology. It will support IP telephony and also make it possible to deploy a broad range of multimedia applications such as video conferencing and streaming media, without need for further upgrades. “Because some of our key programmes, such as the CAD and CAM design applications, use a tremendous amount of bandwidth and require extensive cooperation among support and engineering staff across the network, we recognised that only by upgrading to Cisco’s AVVID could we effectively maximise our efficiencies and speed up our planning processes,” said Ebtisam Al-Shemmary, IT director, Kuwaiti Ministry of Public Works. The new network replaces the existing system with a premier intelligent network using Cisco Catalyst 6500 switches with 10GE and 1GE modules. According to Cisco, the network will improve productivity and efficiency, and address the requirements of bandwidth-hungry design software while offering a complete end-to-end solution covering switching, security and IP telephony. “The Ministry of Public Works has taken a bold and strategic step to implement this upgraded infrastructure, one that puts them at the forefront of networking technology,” commented Eyad Alqadi, regional sales manager, Cisco Systems Middle East.
