Nine Moroccan companies have confirmed their intention to exhibit at Gitex this year as participation at the regional trade show by Maghreb-based companies continues to climb. ICT spending in the Maghreb region — comprising Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania — is forecast to climb 15% in full year 2005 to US$1.3 billion according to research house IDC. “With more companies from the Maghreb countries participating in this year’s 25th edition of Gitex, the region will be looking for increased interaction with the world trade community to expand its ICT sector,” explained Helal Saeed Khalfan Al Marri, director general at Dubai World Trade Centre, organisers of the show. According to IDC’s projections, the Maghreb region’s IT market remains dominated by hardware sales, which accounts for 39.4%, of total spending. IT services contributes 23.8% of spend while package software pulls in 13.8%. Peripherals, networking kit and storage products make up the remainder of the market. “Gitex attracts global majors and leading regional players and serves as an ideal platform for networking and conducting business. With the ICT sector projected to grow nearly 20% in the Middle East and Africa, Gitex facilitates conditions beneficial to business in the region,” added Al Marri.
