80% of net users in the UAE say their employers have a problem with viruses, according to the first national survey by YouGov on behalf of Arabian Business magazine. Similarly, almost as many respondents, 79%, claim spam e-mail is an issue. 22% of respondents said spam is now a “very big” problem, while even more users, 26%, see viruses as a major threat to their companies. Continuing with the business theme, few companies in the UAE currently sell much of their output over the internet (just one in five firms sell more than 10% of their products). A similar proportion, 24%, purchase more than 10% of their supplies online. As for consumer internet use, the YouGov poll found that the greater a user’s earnings are, the more likely they are to shop online. As a group, Western expats are by far the most likely to use the net and e-mail to follow news, make travel arrangements and organise their finances. The keenest music downloaders in the UAE are, unsurprisingly, the young, with 61% of 18-29 year old internet users claiming to download music. This figure drops to 28% for 30-45 year olds and further still - to 26% - for more silvery surfers over the age of 46.
