HP has picked company veteran Francesco Serafini to take on the role of senior VP and managing director for HP Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Serafini takes over from Bernard Meric who moves to a new post as senior VP for European Union relations. “Francesco Serafini is an outstanding leader with a deep understanding of not only our services, solutions and product portfolio but also of the unique challenges of competing in very dynamic markets while successfully serving customers,” said Ann Livermore, executive VP, HP technology solutions group. “He is ideally suited to taking HP EMEA forward and extending HP’s regional leadership position.” Serafini will chair the regional leadership team, shaping HP’s strategy in EMEA and developing partnerships. Serafini will also lead HP’s enterprise storage and systems and software and services business units in EMEA. “Our goal is to become a simpler and more responsive company for our customers and partners to do business with. It is a privilege for me to lead a very talented team in EMEA and to drive our business success in the region. I would like to thank Bernard Meric, who led this region and played a critical role in a challenging time. He succeeded in strengthening HP’s market position and built a strong and aligned European leadership team, of which I was proud to be a part,” said Serafini. Meric took on the top EMEA job in August 2004 when former HP CEO Carly Fiorina axed three senior executives after ‘unacceptable execution’ in the IT giant’s enterprise servers and storage division. This led the unit to post operating losses of US$208m during the third quarter ending July 31st 2004. Kasper Rorsted, managing director for EMEA and senior VP for HP’s customer solutions group (CSG) was one of the three executives axed. This cleared the way for Bernard Meric, who had previously served as senior VP for HP’s imaging and printing group (IPG) to replace him.
