Resellers plying their trade on Dubai’s Khalid Bin Waleed Street — a regional hub for the sale and re-export of IT kit in the Middle East — are considering the possibility of launching a trade association to promote their interests and activities. The embryonic plan envisages the formation of a dedicated forum designed to tackle the business issues facing resellers and increase both the visibility and the recognition of this important channel segment in the Middle East. Given the relentless margin pressure that continues to exist in the regional IT market and the rising operating costs that many traders operating on Computer Street now face, many feel the time is right for the local channel community to form an organised trade body. “We should not be working against each other,” said one reseller close to the plan. “Resellers all need to stick together as a team now. Rents are increasing and there is more and more pressure on us from vendors and customers every day. We can hardly make a profit on the margins we currently receive. Together we are much more powerful and could have a proper voice in the market.” Resellers have already held an informal gathering to discuss the potential for a trade association and will take the necessary steps to set up a legally recognised entity if there is enough interest. Trade associations are an established part of the channel structure in developed IT markets around the world. The formation of an official body in Dubai would highlight both the maturity of the local channel and also the desire to serve customers in an efficient and responsible manner.
