A popular Dubai blog today returned after Etisalat appeared to overturn a decision to ban it. Secret Dubai Diary disappeared last week after what other bloggers believe was a complaint about the site’s content. The blog – short for weblog – features the author’s commentary on UAE culture and particularly focuses on discussing issues raised in local publications. But today access to the site was unblocked, revealing a message written by “Secret Dubai” while the ban had been in place. In it the writer revealed they were currently out of the country, saying: “The cyber-ink must dry on the quill for now, as the Great Proxy wields its heavy axe and severs Secret Dubai diary from UAE computers. Will prison vans and manacles await at the airport? Fellow bloggers and web diarists, all courage to you in these dark and difficult times.” Most viewers of the Internet within the UAE get on the net via a proxy server, allowing access to be blocked to sites that are deemed not to meet the area’s cultural values.
