Voice and data network integrator Viewnet, has completed a project at the Al Murooj Rotana hotel, located on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai. Viewnet installed the cabling infrastructure, the network, voice systems and software systems at the hotel, and integrated the network with the front of house computer systems. This will provide a telephone system and high-speed internet to approximately 3,000 connection ports over 248 hotel rooms, 150 suites and 30 serviced offices. The solution included HP network hardware and PABX telephones from Mitel. “One of the biggest issues with the advent of introducing high speed internet to hotels is that they didn’t know how to deal with it. Implementing it is one problem and a lot of hotels are having issues implementing high speed internet. Because we were able to make it all part of the data network, it makes life a lot simpler for them,” said Chris Atkin, sales director GCC at Viewnet. The network system put in place by Viewnet also allows for flexible billing, which means the hotel can bill its customers for both internet and telephone usage by the minute or by the amount of data that a customer uses. For internet access this is usually very difficult. “Hoteliers are looking at extending the amount of control they have through their networks. They want to be able to control much more inside rooms, like curtains, lights are even monitor how many people there are present in the room. The network we have supplied is scaleable and can be expanded to include advanced functionality like this in the future,” said Atkin. The Murooj Rotana hotel opened on the 15 July. It is part of the Al Murooj Complex, which will also feature apartments and offices.
