Starwood is set to become the first international hotel operator to enter the Syrian city of Aleppo. The Sheraton Aleppo Hotel & Towers is on schedule to open in the fourth quarter of 2005. According to Philippe Cassis, senior vice president, regional director for Starwood Hotels in Africa and Middle East, the hotel will be mainly targeting the intra-regional traveller, and expects a large number of visitors from the Gulf countries. “Syria has been directing its efforts to promote intra-regional tourism. About 6.2 million tourists visited Syria in 2004, almost half of them from Arab countries, an increase of 45% over the 2003 figure of 4.3 million,” said Cassis. According to released government figures, Syria generated US $2.2 billion revenue from tourism in 2004. The Sheraton Aleppo Hotel & Towers will be the first internationally managed hotel in Aleppo, and will offer 218 rooms and suites, three restaurants, a pub and a lounge bar. Its recreational facilities include a swimming pool, a health club and a Turkish Bath. The hotel will also offer two fully equipped large meeting rooms; in addition to two smaller function rooms, providing in total, over 1,000m² of meeting space. Aleppo is Syria’s second largest city, and has been a trading centre since Roman times. It is located inland, about 350km north of Damascus.
