Dutco Balfour Beatty Construction Group has picked up the US $55 million (AED200 million) contract to build phase one of the Creek extension that will form the centrepiece of Business Bay. Work is expected to begin immediately, starting with the excavation of 6 million m3 of material and construction of quay walls. Phase one will eventually link up to the Creek and the sea by subsequent phases of the project. Details of how phase two will connect to the Creek at Ras Al Khor, and phase three will reach the sea, crossing Sheikh Zayed Road and Safa Park, have yet to be released. The contract is part of an overall first phase that includes the construction of 11 residential towers and ten to 15 commercial buildings — amounting to an investment of around $680 million. Developed by Dubai Properties, part of Dubai Holding, with Halcrow acting as consultant, Business Bay aims to attract global firms’ regional headquarters with first class business and lifestyle facilities. Al Habtoor Engineering won the project’s first contract earlier this year and is now working on the excavation, fencing and piling for 11 towers.
