Contractor Wade Adams has taken the contract to build a new US $71 million (AED262 million) interchange close to Dubai Marina. It is the second time the project, known as the Fifth Interchange, has been put out to tender after Dubai Municipality decided to re-tender the job earlier this year. Rival contractor Dutco Balfour Beatty is understood to have been low bid the first time the project was let. It is hoped that the new interchange will help to relieve the chronic traffic congestion around this part of the Sheikh Zayed Road, which has been generated by a wave of development activity there. Engineer Mattar Al Tayer, deputy director of Dubai Municiplity, said: “This vital project is part of a series of road projects currently undertaken by Dubai Municipality in a bid to smoothen traffic in the city. “The new interchange would easily accommodate existing and projected vehicular traffic in the area where a lot of major development projects are coming up such as the Dubai Marina, Palm Jumeirah and the Emirates Golf Club.” Al Tayer added that the interchange project would involve a number of bridges to ease the traffic flow from all directions, as well as service roads to surounding areas and new signalised intersections. It also involves widening the Sheikh Zayed Road into five lanes in both directions, with an extra lane from Dubai Marina interchange to Jumeirah Lakes Interchange. He said that the technical committee had also approved several landscaping and waste management projects worth $6.5 million, which will be undertaken within a period of one year. The project marks the third big contractor award for Wade Adams — it recently picked up another major interchange on the road, in addition to the Palm Interchange. The project is expected to be completed in around 20 months.
