Jordanian GSM new entrant Umniah Mobile Company is set to introduce USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) and video streaming as part of its strategy to offer subscribers access to new services at value-for-money prices, said Michael Dagher, managing partner of Umniah. USSD is a technology that is used to send text between a mobile phone and an application programme in the network. Applications may include prepaid roaming or mobile chatting. USSD is similar to SMS, though transactions based on USSD occur during the session only. With SMS, messages can be sent to a mobile phone and stored for several days if the phone is not activated or within range. “We believe that through our business offering, through our management, through our technology, we will always give the best value for money for the end-user, and that’s our objective in the marketplace,” Dagher said. Umniah is operating in a highly competitive sector in which there already exist two incumbent GSM operators and a single iDEN operator. However, since launching commercially at the end of June, Dagher says he remains confident of his company’s chances of making a positive impact on the Jordanian mobile market. “I do believe [in the market opportunity], otherwise we would not have invested and put our trust in the market, Dagher said. “So far we have indicated from business projections and studies, that we see the market penetration increasing from 25% [today] up to 50 or 55% in the next five years or so. I believe this figure can be achieved at a much more rapid rate if we maintain the stable political and economic conditions in the country,” Dagher added.
