Western Digital (WD) has followed Maxtor’s lead by ramping up the capacity of its enterprise hard drive family. WD’s Caviar RE drives will now offer 30% more data space. This means both its SATA and EIDE models are now available in capacities of up to 320GB (compared to 224GB previously). This adding of gigabytes follows hot on the heels of Maxtor’s similar increase last month, only this saw it raise the maximum data capacity of its entire line of hard disk products - from its QuickView consumer electronics combo drives to its MaXLine enterprise models – to 500GB. Despite its maximum enterprise drive capacity being the smallest, WD claims its drives are kitted out with the kind of features that better fit their target market segment. According to Hafeez Khawaja, WD’s senior regional director, MEASA, “Until now, IT professionals in need of affordable, high-capacity and reliable storage have been utilising desktop-class drives in demanding multi-user environments - an application for which desktop hard drives are not designed. Addressing this customer need, WD optimised its high-capacity 7,200rpm drives with technology that significantly increases reliability and multi-drive-system compatibility. WD’s Caviar RE drives include a feature called Time Limited Error Recovery (TLER), which the firm says helps prevent drive fallout caused by standard extended desktop hard drive error-recovery processes. Prior to its development of TLER, WD reckons that hard drive fallout when using desktop drives in RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) applications was a common experience among systems integrators and storage manufacturers. Caviar RE drives feature one million hours MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure), offering systems builders and storage system manufacturers reliability in high-duty cycle applications. WD’s enterprise drives also come equipped with Data Lifeguard Tools - a software suite that works in conjunction with the embedded data lifeguard features such as shock protection, environmental protection system, and embedded error detection and repair features - to make hard drive installation, management and diagnostics easy and error-free. Finally, WD Caviar RE drives also pack in 8MB of cache, which the firm claims leads to a higher percentage of cache hits and significantly faster time-to-data than industry-standard drives with just 2MB of cache.
