Samsung has launched two new LCD monitors, which it claims offers “the world’s fastest response time” of 4ms (milliseconds). This announcement comes in the wake of Viewsonic’s recent claim of having launched LCD monitors with precisely the same response time. The two new LCDs – the 17-inch SyncMaster 730BF and 19-inch SyncMaster 930BF - feature Samsung’s proprietary ‘Response Time Accelerator (RTA)’ chip, which according to the company attempts to minimise the response time when switching colours. The RTA chip reduces the time needed for switching between mid-level colours (grey to grey) in moving images and these new offerings are targeted at multimedia aficionados and design professionals. Samsung currently claims 41% of the LCD PC monitor market in the Middle East according to the European market research agency GfK. These new offerings, Samsung reckons, will help it grow this share to over 45% during 2005. “The response time listed in monitor specifications refers to the time needed to switch between highest level and lowest level colours (white to black), which only appear in images with little movement, such as text or web-surfing,” said K. V. Narayanan, sales manager, IT Division at Samsung Gulf Electronics. “Samsung’s new models with minimised response times in mid-level colours remove dragging in moving images, and flickering when using professional designer programs such as CAD.” Coinciding with this launch, Samsung has also unveiled the new SyncMaster CX720 TA, which has a front bezel processed with Silver-Nano coating for an anti-bacterial and sterilising effect. The Silver-Nano coating technology, launched in April in the Middle East, attempts to purify and deodorise the surfaces of electronic items that come in contact with skin. According to Samsung, the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards has proven that Silver-Nano coating removes 99% of Colon Bacilli, 99% of Bacillus Subtilis and 88% of Staphylococci bacteria. In addition, the vent at the bottom of the LCD screen emits anions, which according to the company strengthen the human immune system and relieve stress. Viewsonic also recently claimed to launch “the world’s fastest LCD monitors”. Its 19-inch VX924 and 17-inch VX724 both feature a quoted response times of 4ms.
