DVD Filmmakers is planning to use on-the-job training this summer to teach students in Dubai how to make a documentary. Immediately after the course, students will have the opportunity to work on a documentary that revolves around martial arts and community outreach. “Documentary Filmmaking is a combination of many skill sets, primarily proposal writing, budget management, directing, copywriting, cinematography, and editing,” says Akyli Ewell, the founder of DVD Filmmakers and a Certified Television Production Technology teacher. “With us, you can learn the skills you will need to make a documentary. We provide students with an overview of the various professional positions that come into play. They can then choose which areas they wish to become specialised in. By using this co-operative learning approach to teaching, students spend more time doing what they actually like and show aptitude, thereby producing results. We want to expose our students to as much production time as possible,” says Ewell. Tentatively titled The DVD Dojo Challenge, the documentary will follow the life of 10 residents of Dubai as they embark on a six-week training course in self-defense and then host free workshops for the public. “Our students will periodically follow the progress and setbacks of the martial artistes during training sessions, visit them at their home to get their families’ viewpoints and show how they assist members of their community. Projects like these will give students and professionals alike the opportunity to refine their craft, learn new skills, and give back to their community,” says Ewell. The first phase of the documentary is scheduled to include six weeks of shooting, from mid-July to the end of August.
