Contractor Al Naboodah Laing O’Rourke is close to being awarded a US $600 million (AED2.2 billion) deal to build a massive hotel that will form part of the Atlantis project in Dubai. The $1.1 billion project will also include the largest water park in the Middle East. Last month, Construction Week revealed that Australian contractor Leighton had signed a pre-construction agreement with hospitality group Kerzner International to develop the water park element of the project in joint venture with Emtech. Now the remaining half of the mega-project looks set to go to Al Naboodah Laing O’Rourke. Kerzner International president Jim Boocher confirmed that his company was working with the contractor on developing designs for the hotel. An award could be made within the next six weeks. He said: “The hotel side is further along. The documents probably need another six to eight weeks to clean up and then an award can be made.” This component will be made up of two main hotel buildings of 23 and 18 storeys in height. Together they will offer 2000 hotel rooms. Enabling works for the project have already started, including the reclamation of a 20 m beach extension. Piling works have also been awarded to M Tech, with work expected to commence in August or September. The water theme park that is being developed by Leighton will be able to accommodate 6000 visitors daily. It is expected to feature unique water attractions, including one of the world’s largest marine habitats, a snorkel trail and other marine-based attractions. The crescent of the Palm Jumeirah has been specially widened in order to accommodate the project. Around 25 acres of land have also been reserved for the future development of the Atlantis resort.
