eCompany, Etisalat’s internet services arm, has launched a new awareness initiative to educate users about the threat from phishing. The company outlines various precautions consumers can take to guard themselves against phishing scams on its web site at www.ecompany.ae/security/phishing. Phishing is the latest technique developed by criminals to defraud customers. It refers to fraudulent spam e-mails and web sites disguised as trusted brands that trick consumers into giving personal and financial information, which is then used for identity and financial theft. With e-commerce growing to $150 billion in revenue globally, users are spending more money by shopping online. Phishers have seen this as an opportunity to divert more users than ever before to bogus shopping sites. eCompany has already deployed an anti-spam solution on its servers as a measure to reduce spam, which is itself a source of phishing. The solution, called Anti Spam Plus, is based on Symantec’s Brightmail technology, which protects Al Shamil’s broadband subscribers. According to the company, this technology uses more than 20 filtering technologies and proprietary methods to protect users from spammers who send phishing e-mails. This service is currently available for free with eCompany’s web hosting services (www.ecompany.ae/webhosting) and e-mail service (www.ecompany.ae/mail). Existing dial-up internet customers also have access to the regular anti-spam service. UAE users wanting to register a complaint about phishing incidents can do so at www.ecompany.ae/feedback, or they can call the internet helpdesk at 800-6-100 for assistance. While eCompany has upped the ante to try and weed out phishing attacks, users can also protect themselves from phishers by installing anti-phishing programs such as Netcraft’s toolbar, which is available for both Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers. This toolbar blocks phishing sites and helps users be more security-aware when surfing by including features such as risk ratings for web sites, information about the popularity of a site, and the country in which the site is hosted. These toolbars can be freely downloaded from http://toolbar.netcraft.com.
