Samsung has launched what it claims is the world’s first USB-enabled multifunction device, by which it is referring to its new SCX-4720F MFD (multifunction device) being able to print from (and scan to) a USB memory stick. This functionality - similar to memory card slots - allows users to do without a PC altogether. In addition, Samsung also claims the MFD is also great value thanks to its proprietary one-touch Toner Save button. This can, claims Samsung, reduce toner consumption by up to 40%. The firm’s new SCX-4720F series is aimed at professional small and mid-sized workgroups. In addition to its Toner Save mode, the MFD also offers a special copy feature, called ‘I.D. Copy (2 sided in 1 page)’ that prints automatic copies of two-sided documents within one page. According to Mr. K.H. Koh, general manager, of Samsung Gulf’s Digital Information Technology Division, “The world’s first USB-enabled MFD is a testimony of Samsung’s commitment to deliver advanced and feature-rich laser multifunction products for different office environments.” He also claimed that, “according to recent industry insights”, there is a growing trend among consumers to use digital documents, with the USB memory stick becoming the preferred device due to its easy-to-use and portable features. On the print and scan performance front, Samsungs SCX-4720F claims the fastest speeds in its class (up to 20ppm). In addition to also incorporating fax functionality, the MFD includes a high-speed 33.6 Kbps modem, 1.5 second ‘quick scanning’, 200 speed dial, 40 one-touch dial and 50-sheet automatic document feeder.
