Qatar Airways has signed two memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with Lufthansa Technik valued at more than US $100 million for MRO and installation work. The initial contract signed by the two parties will see the German MRO provider take over the engine maintenance and overhaul of the airline’s Airbus A329 fleet for the next ten years, with the second contract seeing Lufthansa Technik install Rockwell Collins Tailwind 560 for onboard live satellite television. Under the first contract servicing of the IAE V2500 engines on Qatar’s 17 Airbus A320 aircraft will take place at Lufthansa Technik’s Engine Services in Hamburg under a total engine support (TES) contract. The second agreement to install live satellite television sees the Qatari flag carrier as the first international airline to offer its passengers live TV. Engineers will equip the fleet of 15 Airbus A330s with antennas and corresponding systems to integrate the TV function into the existing in-flight entertainment system. “As a key player in the Middle East and international aviation market, we are committed to always attain the highest standards of safety, reliability and comfort. Today, while entrusting our engines to Lufthansa Technik, we are not only securing a reliable operation of our Airbus fleet but also setting the new standard of comfort for in-flight entertainment among international carriers,” said Akbar Al Baker, CEO, Qatar Airways at this year’s Paris Air Show. “The growth in the global aviation market becomes more and more visible with the Middle East region being at the forefront,” said August Henningsen, chairman of the executive board, Lufthansa Technik. “In order to justify the trust Qatar Airways is placing in our technical expertise for two such challenging projects, we will also dedicate a special team to insure the best service available,” he added. Lufthansa Technik enjoys a good reputation for both service packages offered. Already five years ago the company's engineers installed a live TV system onboard a VIP Airbus A340 of an undisclosed customer.
