Dubai, a major business and tourist hub for the region, was hit by widespread power failures earlier today after reports of a cabling fire at a power station in Jebel Ali. Power went off in homes and businesses across the city at around 9.45am, taking several hours to be restored. The phone network was also out of action across the city, with fixed telephone lines down and mobile coverage almost non-existent. Traffic on the roads was also affected with traffic signals being out of action. According to reports, there were a few minor accidents on the roads. Residents were being urged to be sparing with electrical appliances and air conditioning facilities. Quick off the mark, data recovery specialist Veritas’ PR team sent out a press release advising businesses of the need to have good data backup, data recovery and data management strategies in place. The company has recently released new versions of its flagship NetBackup and Enterprise Vault products.
