Operators set to face ban on timeshare ads

As hospitality groups in Dubai prepare to launch the emirate's first timeshare projects, a government official warns there may be a ban on timeshare advertising.

Timeshare operators in Dubai may face an advertising ban, according to a top government official. The warning comes as several hospitality groups queue up to launch major timeshare construction projects in Dubai. In an exclusive interview with Construction Week, Ali Ibrahim, deputy director general at the Dubai Department of Economic Development, said: “We are looking to prohibit timeshare brokers from carrying out any promotional activities or concluding any contacts via visits to private homes.” Several planned developments in Dubai will include timeshare elements. But the authorities are keen to avoid a repeat of the scandals that have plagued the timeshare industry in Europe. (See interview on page 12).
