Maxtor cranks drives up to 500GB, while WD lights combos

Maxtor Corporation and Western Digital (WD) have today both announced their next-generation hard disks. Maxtor has boosted the capacities of its 3.5-inch 7200RPM drives to 500GB (half a terabyte), while WD has redesigned its 320GB Extreme Lighted Combo drives to appeal more to design conscious consumers.

Maxtor Corporation and Western Digital (WD) have today both announced their next-generation hard disks. Maxtor has boosted the capacities of its 3.5-inch 7200RPM drives to 500GB (half a terabyte), while WD has redesigned its 320GB Extreme Lighted Combo drives to appeal more to design conscious consumers. Maxtor’s 500GB capacity will span its whole line of hard disk products, from its QuickView consumer electronics combo models to its MaXLine enterprise drives, DiamondMax shared storage line and OneTouch external storage and backup products. Each of Maxtor’s 500GB hard drives will also be RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) compliant. “The Maxtor 500GB hard drive underscores the company’s emphasis on differentiation across all of its product lines,” said David Reinsel, director of storage research at IDC, “and reflects competitiveness within market segments demanding the highest capacity drives.” Meanwhile WD’s Extreme Lighted Combo drives offer up 320GB of storage space plus USB and FireWire connectivity, and are being pitched by the company as perfect for storing all the data users can’t cram onto their laptops or PCs - such as photos, favorite MP3s, videos and games. Created very much with the design conscious, colour loving consumer in mind, the new lighted combo drives are being offered in the full spectrum of color choices and are semi-transparent, in that their internal components can be seen through their clear cases. “WD Extreme Lighted Combo drives combine strong utility value with appealing looks and we expect them to gain wide acceptance among case modders, DJs and PC enthusiasts who look for new ways of expressing themselves,” said Hafeez Khawaja, WD’s senior regional director, Middle East, Africa and South Asia.
