Dubai plans to build a city for exhibitions at a cost of more than US $2 billion (AED 8 billion). The 300-hectare Dubai Exhibitions City would be completed in phases by 2020 and include some 19 exhibition and conference halls. The project, which will also include residential, office and hotel elements, will be developed within Jebel Ali Airport City, with the first phase due to be completed in 2009. Sheikh Hamdan said the project would enhance the UAE's commercial position and reinforce Dubai's reputation as a leading destination for conferences and exhibitions.
