Thomsun Mercantile & Marine, a division of UAE-based Thomsun Group of Companies has begun construction on its 30,000 m² distribution centre at Jebel Ali Free Zone’s (Jafza) South Zone, which will be outsourced to local as well as mulinational companies. The laying of the foundation stone was performed by HE Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, executive chairman, Dubai Ports, Customs & Free Zone and marked a further nine months of construction before the facility will be fully completed and operational. “We expect to be completed in nine months, and already we have had interest from a number of companies wanting to use the facility, including Pioneer and Unilever. However, we are also projecting some more multinational companies to tie in with us as well,” said Joseph Gonsalves, general manager, Thomsun Mercantile & Marine. The warehouse will be temperature controlled and part of the space will be open planned so bulk items can be stored as well. However, as yet, Thomsun are still considering what racking and warehouse management system (WMS) to use. “We are looking at SSI Schaefer and Famco for the racking system but we have not decided which one we will implement. Additionally, we have approached two solutions and we will decide in due course as we need to make sure that we get the right solution for us,” added Gonsalves.
