Emirates Airline is set to add a third hotel to its hospitality portfolio. The company announced plans for the construction of a new five-star Dhs 800 million (US $218 million) hotel in Dubai at Arabian Travel Market last month. The new 70-storey, 350-metres high building will be located on Sheikh Zayed Road, and will be among the world’s five tallest hotels, and one of the largest in the UAE. Futuristic in design, the Emirates hotel will offer cantilever rooms and over 50 sky terraces. When completed in 2008, the hotel will offer 560 deluxe rooms, 112 suites and one Presidential suite. Architecturally, the property will prove distinctive with a stepped form elevation encased in a glass and aluminium exterior. “Dubai is gearing itself up to welcome close to 17.8 million visitors by 2008. Currently the emirate has only 35,000 hotel rooms. The new Emirates hotel is our contribution to the city’s efforts to cater to the rising tourist arrivals,” Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, chairman of Emirates Group, told Hotelier Middle East. At present, Emirates has not decided if it will manage the 670-room property, as it does with the Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa, or offer it out to a management company, such as Le Meridien, which operates the 218-room Le Meridien Al Aqah Beach Resort in Fujairah, also owned by the airline. Therefore, the name of the property is also not confirmed. The property will boast a 7,600m2 health club, spa facilities, a shopping boulevard, 15 food and beverage outlets and a roof top bar on the 69th floor of the building.
