China State Construction Engineering has won the US $86 million contract to build three towers for the Armada Group in Dubai. The contractor is considering taking up to 700 Chinese construction workers into the emirate to work on the development. The workers will be drafted in to build at least one and possibly all three of the towers. The Armada Group awarded the contract to CSHK Dubai Contracting — a subsidiary of the Chinese construction giant — after the job was put out to competitive tender. CSHK is also understood to be tendering for other planned towers in Dubai. The three buildings will be constructed at Jumeirah Lake Towers, located in the heart of the new Downtown Dubai. CSHK’s package covers the main construction work, as well as the 12 month maintenance of the three towers. Melvyn Ford, CSHK general manager, said: “We intend to finish this project early, if at all possible.” The three Armada towers are expected to house 1200 apartments with a total built up area of around 148 000 m2. They will also house 12 luxurious penthouses — four in each tower. Armada Group chairman, Dr Mohammed Raheef Hakmi, said: “CSHK Dubai was awarded the contract specifically for its unparalleled track record in the industry. “In our view, it is one of the main international companies capable of meeting the rigorous demands of such a massive construction endeavour as the Armada Towers, and we hope that this contract will be the start of a prosperous relationship between the two companies.” Abu Dhabi-based piling contractor APCC has already been awarded the piling package for the project. It has completed piling works on two of the tower sites, and is nearing completion on the third plot. Construction of the three towers is scheduled for completion by the third quarter of 2007.
