SAP and Microsoft’s newly announced partnership would help bridge the gap between business applications and productivity tools, said Gartner Research. According to Yvonne Genovese and Betsy Burton, analysts from Gartner Research, Mendocino, a software product that Microsoft and SAP will jointly develop to connect mySAP business applications with Office productivity suite (see IT Weekly, 3-7 May 2005), would make the two companies’ offerings more attractive to their customers. It will give SAP a short-term competitive advantage for customers seeking more Office integration, while Mendocino offers Microsoft the much-needed weight to further establish Windows and Office as business computing tools, especially since it has been under pressure from internet-standards-based and open-source alternatives. It could also subsequently lead to the next phase of integrated contextual workplaces - integrating enterprise applications and user productivity tools using service-oriented architecture (SOA) — although much work remains to be done before complete knowledge worker integration is achieved, the Gartner analysts said. Gartner believes that other companies will follow a similar approach and predicts that several partnerships between business application and user workplace application vendors will be formed by 2007. SAP will likely collaborate with other user workplace applications, and Microsoft would most likely integrate other business applications within its portfolio, such as Microsoft Business Solutions. Enterprises that plan to evaluate the SAP/Microsoft offering should expect additional costs. Moreover, Mendocino may lag behind other Office releases so customers may have to remain with the version that offers the strongest integration.
