After Syriana, auditions are now in full swing for yet another English-language film that is to be shot in the Middle East – this time, in Bahrain. The romantic comedy, titled Penguin in the Desert, will be produced by Bahrain-based media production house, Al Wa'ad for Media Production and Distribution, in association with US-based film company, Cotton Candy Productions. The film, which is scheduled for shooting in August, revolves around the adventures of a group of teenagers enjoying the pampered lifestyle of expatriates living abroad. "The response we've received from the people in Bahrain has been great and I've seen some very gifted people," commented Dr Willa Dawn Cotton, director of the film and CEO of Al Wa'ad. "I will be calling back some of the chosen characters for another audition to see how they work and interact together," she added. For those who want to be part of a film but don't know if they have the talent, Dr. Cotton says lots of extras with no speaking parts are required as well. And the good news is that they didn’t need to audition. "Anyone interested in being an extra of any age should e-mail us their photograph with their age and contact details," Dr. Cotton said. "We will be announcing the full list of chosen characters shortly." The film, which will submitted to the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, will be shot primarily in one of Bahrain's high schools. "If extra shots are needed, we will do them on the weekends into September because of the start of the school term." Rehearsals for the film will begin in the first week of August and filming will begin a week after. Filming is intended to take three weeks.
