Galfar Engineering & Contracting has been awarded the US $342 million Southern Expressway road project by the Muscat Municipality. The 53 km-long expressway will link Qurum roundabout and Al Naseem roundabout. The period of construction is 51 months. The project will have 39 structures comprising bridges and by-passes, with the longest structure being built at Al Khoud. The total value to date of Galfar’s projects in Oman exceeds US $1.4 billion. One of the greatest contributions of Galfar to the Sultanate is its highly successful Omanisation drive. “The Omani workforce of Galfar is efficient and appropriately trained, because of which Galfar has carved out for itself a niche in the Omani business community,” a company official was quoted as saying. Galfar is just completing the four-year design, civil, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation service contracts ($217 million) of Petroleum Development Oman. In addition to this ongoing project, the company is also carrying out several lump sum EPC and non-EPC contracts on the side. Galfar has just commenced the new five-year (with an option for a two-year extension) off-plot delivery contract in PDO’s north and central Oman oil and gas fields, valued at $340 million. The consortium of Snamp-orgetti (Italy), Bechtel (US) and Galfar had completed in 2000 the $370 million LNG upstream central processing unit, managed by PDO. Other ongoing projects include include several major hospitals, a number of projects for the palace office (Diwan) and for regional municipalities. Also included are electro-mechanical and air conditioning works for a royal guest palace in Barkha, three major fishing harbours, two large stadia complexes and several power and water distribution and sewerage-related projects.
