Nakheel has drawn up secret plans to develop a Rio de Janeiro-themed resort in Dubai. The project been given the working title of ‘Rio de Arabia’. One plan under consideration is for a hotel to be modelled on the city’s famous Sugar Loaf Mountain. The project — originally known as ‘Rio de Jumeirah’ — was first reported in late 2003. Since then, the status of the development has been far from clear as company officials have refused to comment on it. However, this week Nakheel’s technical director, Mounir Haider, confirmed that the project was now known as Rio de Arabia, and that it was likely to be developed in the Umm Suqeim beachfront area of Dubai. The project is believed to be still in the planning phase.
