Dubai Municipality has finalised plans to build seven new footbridges for pedestrians in and around the city centre. The construction of the bridges is estimated to cost US $5.4 million (AED20 million) and will take around nine months to complete. Predicted population and traffic increases have forced the re-think. The local authority recently completed traffic studies in various locations around the city centre that pointed to the need for a greater provision to be made for pedestrians. Tenders are already out for the design and construction package, and work on the bridges could start as early as next month. There are currently just 16 existing pedestrian bridges in Dubai.
