Dubai Port Authority (DPA) is set to introduce a container with a handling capacity of 50 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEU) by 2030 if there is demand, according to a top DPA official. “DPA has been making huge investments and is working on many fronts to meet the demand, growth and expectations of its customers,” said Mohammed Al Muallem, executive director, technical and technology, DPA. Construction of a new terminal at Jebel Ali port next month will increase DPA’s available capacity by an extra 2.5 million TEU’s in 2007 and up to 5 million TEU’s by 2008. “We are further investing US$200 million just for equipment, not including infrastructure costs,” said Al Muallem. Last month Dubai Cargo Village handled 104,800 tonnes of cargo, an increase of 7.5% over March last year, according to recently released figures.
