Hard drive vendor Western Digital has announced 23% growth for its third quarter in its financial year 2004 to 2005. It attributes this largely to growth in the Middle East marketplace. This year on year growth represents US$70.8m net income from revenues of US$920m in the company’s third quarter. Western Digital shipped approximately 15.3 million units during this time. “The rising IT penetration levels in the Middle East have boosted sales of Western Digital products across the region," said Hafeez Khawaja, senior regional director, Middle East, Africa and South Asia at Western Digital. "Our efforts to maintain quality, reliability and performance helped us gain more customers while at the same time enjoying healthy profit margins," he continued. Western Digital also announced a shift in sales for this same period, with 23% of revenue coming from non-desktop sources. This is a marked increase from 14% in the same quarter of the last financial year, 2003 to 2004. Western Digital attributes this to the development and marketing of more products aimed at the consumer electronics and notebook sectors.
