The security market saw another vendor enter the anti-spyware fray when SurfControl announced plans that it will ship software that allows enterprises to thwart unwanted programs from being installed in office PCs. The Enterprise Threat Shield is part of SurfControl’s Enterprise Protection Suite, a collection of web and e-mail security solutions for network perimeter defence. Enterprise Threat Shield is the suite’s endpoint protection layer, which gives companies the ability to prevent spyware variations and malicious applications and services, such as keyloggers, instant messaging clients, P2P downloads and games from ever reaching the desktop. The software has four layers of scanning, including WriteWatch, which monitors file activity in real-time and stops them before they infect users’ machines. It also offers flexible, rule-based security policy creation, including music and video management tools, centralised administration and reporting, and customisable databases that are updated and maintained by SurfControl's Adaptive Threat Intelligence Service. To simplify product deployment the Enterprise Threat Shield easily integrates with current directory services, such as Active Directory and Novell eDirectory, and does not require end-user involvement. “Our unified approach to Internet security is essential for complete protection as threats now blend multiple methods of attack and propagation to render conventional security measures obsolete. With the addition of Enterprise Threat Shield, we are leveraging our strong legacy in web and e-mail filtering to bring a true enterprise-class spyware solution to customers,” said Steve Purdham, chief executive officer at SurfControl.
