The Union Co-Operative Society is celebrating its 23rd birthday on April 27 by running a raffle to win a Daihatsu car. Between now and the end of May, anyone spending more than AED35 at Union Co-Op is eligible to enter the draw for the car. “The Union Co-Operative Society is a true people’s institution formed by the people of the land who were inspired by great visionary leaders like the late President His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai,” said Khalid Humaid Al-Falasi, assistant general manager of Union Co-Op. “This co-operative venture is aimed at helping the community to stand as one integrated unit by protecting consumers and families of limited income from market manipulators. It also aids the government in assisting and developing social establishments like educational, health and charitable organisations.” Union Co-op recently said that it would open the biggest hypermarket in the Middle East in August 2006. Work on it will start in July 2005 in the Al Barsha area. The retailer currently operates seven outlets.
