Veritas Software has unveiled a new version of its popular NetBackup backup and recovery software, which promises better integration with products from other vendors. The new product was announced at the company’s Veritas Vision 2005 conference this week. NetBackup 6.0 offers a single point of management that allows users to backup and recover data copied by a variety of backup and snapshot technologies, including those provided by Network Appliance (NetApp), according to Jeremy Burton, executive vice president of the company’s data management group. “The crown jewel of NetBackup 6.0 is its ability to catalogue everything. Think of it as the Yellow Pages for all your important corporate data,” said Burton. “NetBackup 6.0 catalogues all information, whether it was copied by Veritas or another vendor’s system, so administrators can rapidly recover it — from the most efficient place.” Aside from NetApp, users can discover and retrieve snapshot copies of data that have been created by products from EMC, Hitachi Data Systems and other vendors, or by Unix, Linux, Windows VSS, or by Veritas Storage Foundation, Microsoft Exchange or a host of other systems. As well as data management and recovery, Burton said NetBackup 6.0 could perform bare metal recovery of entire systems from the same interface. Bare metal recovery is the process of rebuilding a computer after a catastrophic failure. The culmination of a two-year collaboration between Veritas and NetApp, NetBackup 6.0 includes features that are tailored to manage NetApp’s products such as NetApp Snapshot, SnapRestore and SnapVault software. “For the past two years we’ve partnered with Veritas to integrate our products and deliver more value for mutual customers and prospects,” said Amit Pandey, vice president and general manager, NearStore Business Unit, Network Appliance. “IT departments familiar with NetBackup can now introduce NetApp disk-based backup technology into their environment to improve operational efficiency through simplified data management and online data recovery.” NetBackup 6.0 also includes the NetBackup Operations Manager, an integrated console that provides monitoring, alerting, reporting and troubleshooting functionalities. It lets administrators gather information in real time and customise reports much better.
