Intel has announced the availability of its first worldwide interoperability for microwave access (Wimax) silicon solution. This provides equipment manufacturers and carriers with the ability to deliver next-generation wireless broadband networks globally. Carriers and service providers worldwide are preparing to commence commercial trials based on Intel silicon products later in the year. This, the company declares, will offer businesses and consumers a chance to see emerging wireless high-speed broadband technology. In addition, key equipment providers are also announcing Wimax solutions based on Intel’s product. Wimax is a standards-based wireless technology for providing high-speed, last-mile broadband connectivity to homes and businesses as well as for mobile wireless networks. Intel’s silicon delivers the features needed to provide cost-effective, high-speed wireless modems for homes and businesses. Initial deployments will enable delivery of broadband Internet access to remote areas not served by DSL or cable at present. “As a standards-based, high-speed internet access solution, Wimax can provide the platform for the next generation of Internet expansion,” explains Intel’s marketing development manager in the Middle East, Turkey and Africa, Ferhad Patel. The aim is to render wireless internet access simpler and more cost-effective. “In addition to delivering the first flexible, highly integrated Wimax system-on-chip, Intel has worked with a number of parties, including carriers and equipment manufacturers, to prepare the industry for the next wave of wireless technology,” Patel adds. Some of the carriers working with Intel to enable a broad ecosystem around Wimax include AT&T, Qwest and Speakeasy in the US; British Telecom in the UK and Sify in India.
