In town this week for the first time in two years, BenQ Corporation’s top management yesterday announced that the firm will begin selling its mobile phones into the region from June or July this year. Chief Marketing Officer, Jerry Wang, told ITP.net that the Taiwanese firm will select a few models and offer these in the UAE first, with PDA and smartphone releases also possible in the following months. In 2004, BenQ announced that it would bring its cellphones - which contribute 16% of its total branded sales - to the Middle East by last year’s end. However, Jerry Wang, chief marketing office of BenQ Corporation, told itp.net yesterday that full plans took some time to put into place. “At headquarters, when we launch products into new markets, it requires very thorough planning and discussion,” Wang said. “We want to get into the market seriously rather than play at it. That’s why I delayed a little bit, because I wasn’t satisfied with the trend, the method, and we needed to review the marketing plan and give the resources, in terms of the product portfolio and the marketing effort.” “There isn’t any one thing stopping us from launching them,” elaborated Manish Bakshi, BenQ’s general manager for the Middle East & Africa, “it’s just we have to decide the right market, at the right time, and the right models to launch.” In a one-to-one interview yesterday, Wang showed itp.net an MP3 player device with phone functionality built-in, which may find its way onto this region’s market in the summer. However, final details of which models will be launched in the UAE have yet to be confirmed.
