New storage platform from Hitachi

The firm has launched storage solutions to simplify storage infrastructure management.

Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) has launched the industry’s first dynamic multi-dimensional data movement solution: The Hitachi HiCommand Tiered Storage Manager. The solution enables companies to migrate data across heterogeneous storage without disruption to the application itself. The innovation to simplify storage infrastructure management has been met with welcome by analysts. “Every storage supplier is talking about information lifecycle management and the need to migrate data across tiers of storage,” explains John McArthur, group vice president and general manager of information infrastructure research, at IDC. The new product is a building on the virtualisation capabilities of the Hitachi TagmaStore Universal Storage platform. “This multi-dimensional, tiered, heterogeneous storage environment is key to enabling customers to realise the value of their information assets,” adds McArthur, who also points out the end user’s need to manage the replication of data, as well as the provision of information access to applications that may require different data management solutions. Hitachi’s latest offering moves data to storage media to satisfy the cost requirements and quality of service of applications. The company claims that it recognises and addresses the changing requirements of applications, allowing data to be frequently migrated between storage tiers to maintain an optimal location. “Hitachi Data Systems is taking a more integrated, pragmatic, but continuously evolving, approach under the Application Optimized Storage strategy,” says Jack Domme, vice president, storage management software, HDS. “With this combination, we deliver real benefit to the customer by closely matching the value of data to storage attributes and the needs of the business application, and by re-purposing older storage for archival roles.”
