Union Co-operative Society (Union Co-op) has said that it plans to open one of the largest hypermarkets in the Middle East in Dubai’s Al Barsha area. The 18,000 m² (193,750 ft²) store will be built at a cost of around US $32.7 million and could open as soon as August 2006. “This outlet is [projected] to generate AED1.5 million per day [in sales] and to serve between 15,000 and 20,000 customers,” Khalid Humaid Al Falasi, assistant general manager of Union Coop, told Gulf News earlier this week. Union Co-op currently operates seven stores and plans to have nine by August this year. The organisation reported revenue of US $195 million in 2004.
