BMC Software has strengthened its identity management offering with the capture of web access management firm OpenNetwork. The US$18 million deal will see BMC incorporate OpenNetwork’s browser-based authentication and authorisation technology into its product lineup, the software vendor said. OpenNetwork’s software allows users to access applications from different locations through a web browser. It can also be used to help control access to a corporate extranet. The deal follows on from BMC’s acquisition of Calendra, which also makes identity management software, in January this year. BMC said web access management fits with its business service management offering, which is designed to allow customers to manage information technology systems from a business perspective. “This fits very much into our strategy of enhancing our security provisioning offerings,” said Tim Peck, general manager for BMC Software Middle East. “We are putting a lot of focus around this area now.” According to analyst house Ovum, the acquisition of OpenNetwork is a good one for BMC as it will flesh out the vendor’s overall capabilities. “For BMC this is a relatively small purchase but it helps to enhance its identity management suite,” said Ovum analyst David Bradshaw. “Identity management is a very hot topic in IT at the moment and many vendors, such as HP with its OpenView, are seeking to stake out their position,” he added. BMC Software said it will begin delivering many of the OpenNetwork solutions to its customers around the world immediately. The deal will see OpenNetwork’s 40 employees join BMC’s Identity Management Business Unit.
