Rotana TV launched the Arab world’s first free-to-air, Arabic movies-only channel at a special ceremony in Dubai last month. Rotana, which is well known for its music channel, is said to have access to the biggest library of Arabic movies in the Middle East. “Our film library includes more than 70% of all the movies that have been made in Arabic,” claims Dr Hala Sarhan, general manager of Rotana Cinema channel. “We also have big plans for the future and for our own productions. We are planning crossovers between the music and film industries. We will use superstars from the music industry in our future film production projects.” In an unprecedented move, Rotana TV has also pledged to act as the curator for Middle East films. It has acquired state-of-the-art equipment that has the capability to create digital versions of old black-and-white movies to bring them up to cinema standards.
