Computer Associates’ eTrust Antivirus software will be pre-installed on the next generation of i-mate PDAs and smartphones as part of an agreement struck between the two vendors. Existing i-mate users will be able to download the software from the mobile device vendor’s website at a subsidised price. “CA’s agreement with i-mate represents a significant step forward for the global mobile communications industry, bringing enterprise-class antivirus protection to the rapidly expanding converged mobile device market,” said Gilbert Lacroix, vice president and general manager for CA in the Arab countries. “Just as CA has led the way in protecting IT infrastructure within corporate and small and medium-sized business environments, we anticipate a high uptake for this new initiative, especially with smart devices like i-mate phones and PDAs becoming more and more popular both for business as well as personal use,” he added. Jim Morrison, founder and CEO at i-mate, said: "With mobile computing becoming increasingly prevalent, today’s smartphones and PDAs have large amounts of corporate and personal data residing in them. It becomes essential to protect our device owners from security threats including virus attacks that may render this data insecure. Partnering with CA to provide virus protection on our devices is the right approach for creating a safe operating environment for our customers." OEM deals figure prominently on CA’s expansion agenda in the region. Since unveiling its plan to strengthen this route-to-market as a growth strategy in October 2004, CA has struck agreements with a slew of vendors including Microsoft, Iomega and PC2000.
