Amidst the suspense surrounding who will construct the Dubai Light Rail System, promoter Dubai Municipality has announced its plans to create a third track, named the ‘Blue Line’. The proposed Blue Line will connect the existing in-city Dubai International Airport with the new airport that will be built in Dubai’s Jebel Ali area, according to officials connected with the multibillion-dollar project. Nasser Ahmed Saeed, general co-ordinator of the Dubai Light Rail project, told delegates at the recent MetroRail 2005 conference in London that the municipality will proceed ith a Blue Line after the completion of the Red and Green lines. “The Blue Line is designed to perform two functions: it will be a link between the current Dubai International Airport and the proposed Jebel Ali Airport, and it will also be a service for the areas located between the terminals. That is why we are studying the feasibility of a three-track line, with one of the tracks directly linking the two airports,” explained the municipal official. The Red Line is currently proposed to run from Al Rashidya Depot to near the American University of Dubai, on to Jebel Ali Port. The shorter Green Line is to run from Dubai Airport Free Zone to Dubai Healthcare City area. The two junction stations between the Red and the Green lines will be at Union Square in Deira and in BurJuman area in Bur Dubai side. BurJuman station is likely to be underground. The first level will be 6 m underground, from where passengers can depart for the Green Line that will be 12 m below street level. The Red Line will run 18 m below street level. Nasser Saeed said that the municipality will also be drawing up a master plan oriented towards the needs of mass transit. The plan will be ready by the end of 2005.
